Exhibition Celebrates Restoration of Democracy

exhibition ParliamentThe President of the Republic, Karolos Papoulias inaugurated on Thursday morning at 11:00 am an exhibition to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the restoration of democracy in Greece. The exhibition is being hosted in the Greek Parliament, in the Eleftherios K. Venizelos hall.
The exhibition includes official legislative and constitutional documents, newspaper and magazine front pages, photographs and videos from the period of the dictatorship, as well as posters, political banners, ballots from the November 1974 elections and the referendum that took place one year after the Turkish invasion of Cyprus and the collapse of the military dictatorship on July 24, 1974.
The exhibition also presents the cultural events of the era. After the collapse of the dictatorship a climate of freedom and excitement prevailed in the country’s cultural scene, with big concerts, groundbreaking performances, art exhibitions and important films.
The exhibition, which will be open to the public in September, was organised by the Library of Parliament and the Foundation for Parliamentarism and Democracy, under the scientific supervision of experts.
The Greek military junta followed the coup d’ etat on April 21, 1967  led by a group of colonels. The following seven years of military dictatorship were the culmination of 30 years of national division between the forces of the left and the right. The dictatorship ended on July 24, 1974.
