First Greek Judo Teacher Passes Away

papailiopoulos12A significant figure in the field of judo, teacher Christos Papailiopoulos, the man who organized the first judo school in Greece passed away last night, June 26, after a brief battle with cancer. He was 86 years old.
Papailiopoulos was not the first judo teacher in Greece, but he was the first to open an organized judo school in the Panhellenic Athletic Club, during the 1950s. In the beginning, he used to teach under extremely difficult conditions.
He was taught the martial art of judo in Germany, where he used to live during his young age. He started teaching at the wrestling space of the Panhellenic Athletic Club until the 1980s. Then he returned to his hometown, Thessaloniki, where he remained until the end of his life.
His teaching method was characterized by his strict obedience to the rules, which is an important part of every sport of Japanese origin. During his time as a judo teacher he arranged for the Japanese teacher Masao Iijima to come to Athens and teach covering all expenses himself.
Many of his students from that era are currently considered to be at the top of the hierarchy of judo. He was the teacher of teachers.
