Greece Acquires First Solar Boats

solar boatGreece acquired its first two solar boats. The boats will be used for leisure trips in the protected areas of Small and Big Prespa lakes in the Greek borders with Albania, in the framework of the transnational project entitled “Green Boat.”
It is estimated that the project and the trips with the solar boats could contribute to the development of tourism as well as to the promotion of the region as an alternative tourist destination.
The “Green Boat” project is included in the Greece-Albania 2007-2013 program, aiming to promote the cultural and natural heritage of the Prespes lakes through solar boats trips. The project was presented at the First European Territorial Cooperation Conference: Promoting Best Practices-Sharing Experiences held in May in Thessaloniki under the Greek Presidency of the EU Council.
The closing event of the program will take place on July 30 in the hall of the Municipality of Prespes, in the presence of representatives of local and regional bodies.
The Prespes lakes contain the highest degree of species biodiversity in a corresponding surface area in Europe. It is a unique lake landscape of outstanding natural beauty that includes a wealth of monuments from the Byzantine and post-Byzantine period. Trips around the area using solar powered boats will increase the attractiveness of the area and will demonstrate the endless potentials and advantages of solar power.
