Greek Education Ministry to Hire 22,500 Substitute Teachers

Greek SchoolThe Education and Religious Affairs Ministry is racing against time to cover as many teacher shortages as possible by September 11, when schools are scheduled to reopen for the 2014-2015 school year, in order to alleviate problems in the education process.
In this framework, the ministry plans to hire 22,500 substitute teachers for primary and secondary education schools, so as to minimize the negative effects the mass retirement of teaching and administrative school staff has caused.
Speaking before the parliamentary Standing Committee on Cultural and Educational Affairs, both Greek Education Minister Andreas Loverdos and Deputy Minister Alexandros Dermetzopoulos underlined that no new teachers have been employed or appointed since 2013, although 6,200 teachers retired in 2013 and another 11,200 teachers retired in 2014.
To tackle the problem, the ministry resorted to hiring 19,000 substitute teachers in 2013, a hiring number expected to rise further to 22,500 for 2014.
Dermetzopoulos said that despite the shortages in administrative staff, schools’ most urgent needs are in teaching staff.
According to Loverdos, a bill will be ready on Wednesday – to be tabled in Parliament immediately – which will include provisions related to the National Education Council, as well as regulate issues related to teachers being appointed to border and insular areas in Greece.
The minister also said that the parliamentary groups were handed a draft bill of the ministry on Friday concerning religious communities.
