Greece Champion in Unemployment at 27.3%

unemployment_GreeceAccording to figures released by Eurostat in Brussels on Thursday, Greek unemployment stood at 27.3% in April. The unemployment rate in the euro zone reached 11.5% in June, down from 11.6% in May, while in the EU it declined by 0.1% and reached 10.2%.
While the euro zone has the lowest unemployment rate since March 2012, Greece remains first in both unemployment and youth unemployment, which reached 56.3% in April.
According to data from Eurostat, about 25 million European citizens were unemployed in June, 18 million of which are euro zone citizens. The member states that presented the lowest unemployment were Austria at 5%, Germany at 5.1% and Malta at 5.6%, while the highest rates were recorded in Greece at 27.3% and Spain at 24.5 %.
Compared to June 2013, unemployment dropped in 21 member states, increased in five and remained stable in the Netherlands and Sweden. The largest decline in unemployment was recorded in Portugal (14.1% from 16.6%), Hungary (8.1% from 10.4%) and Ireland (11.8% from 13.6%) and the highest increase was recorded in Finland (8.8% from 8.1%), Luxembourg (6.3% from 5.9%) and Austria (5% from 4.7%).
In June 2014, about 5,129,000 young people under 25 were unemployed in the EU, 3,319,000 of which are citizens of member states of the euro zone. The youth unemployment rate in the euro zone declined, reaching 23.1% while in the EU it reached 22%. The lowest rates of youth unemployment were recorded in Germany at 7.8%, Austria at 9% and the Netherlands at 10.5%, while the highest were recorded in Greece at 56.3%, Spain at 53.5% and Italy at 43.7%.
