Greek Frigate Evacuates 186 People from Libya

Greek Navy Frigate Evacuates 186 People from LibyaThe Greek Navy frigate ”Salamis” completed its mission successfully this morning, August 1. The Hellenic Navy ship evacuated 186 Greek and foreign nationals from Libya and is transporting them back safely. The Embassy of Greece in Tripoli, Libya, had requested the help of the Hellenic Navy because of the escalating violence in the region.
oyk4”Salamis” transferred safely 186 people. More specifically, 77 Greeks (including the Greek diplomatic mission), 12 Cypriots, 78 Chinese, 10 British, 7 Belgians, 1 Russian and 1 Albanian.
The operation started shortly after 8pm on Thursday, July 31, when the ship arrived off the port of Tripoli while at the same time the Chinese government chartered the Greek passenger ship Eleftherios Venizelos in order to help evacuate even more citizens from Libya.  Immediately after the operation was completed, the Greek Embassy in Tripoli announced that it would close down.
The frigate is moving to the port of Piraeus, where it is expected to arrive on Saturday morning, August 2.
