Impressive Film of Athens During the 1960s

athens 1961Life in the Greek capital in 1961 is presented in a film by the British Pathe. The film that has re-surfaced recently on the internet is a tourist tribute to Athens of 1961.
The film presents central streets of Athens such as Amalias and Panepistimiou where there are more buses than cars. In the picturesque neighborhood of Plaka there are few people and tourist shops while the tourists enjoy their holidays and buy grapes from street vendors.
In Syntagma Square, a street photographer with a classic, old camera is taking the photo of a little boy sitting on a bench.
Stunning images from Mikrolimano in Piraeus show a few low buildings and local fishermen with their nets spread all over the pier. The beaches are clean and business activity is low.
Several swimmers in Vouliagmeni beach are enjoying the sun. As we can see, they weren’t using umbrellas to be protected from the sun as in those years the terms skin cancer and hole in the ozone were unknown. People were considering the sun as a friend who would help them get a tropical tan rather than an enemy who would damage their skin.
Around the old airport of Athens in the area of Elliniko there is not a single building while there no houses in Hymettos mountain.
