Eray Özer, the Turkish-Cypriot who last week said that he would return the land given to him by the Turkish- Cypriot authorities to the rightful Greek owners, said on Monday that he reconsidered his decision.
Özer and members of his family were waiting at the offices of the daily Politis in order to meet with the community leaders of Voni and Palekythro, and the owners of the property in his possession. However, they left after waiting for an hour and no one showed up.
Özer appeared very disappointed as he wasn’t taken seriously. “I am very sad because I realise that they did not take me seriously,” he said, adding that he expected the two community leaders to show up.
The Turkish-Cypriot had offered to return the property to its rightful owners without expecting anything in return.
Irini Gavriel the leader of Palekithro community said that there was no reason to attend the meeting, since she herself could not identify any of the properties and that anyone interested should search the title deeds through the state’s land registry.
Voni community leader Giorgos Antoniou said that he had requested to meet Özer at another time as he was unable to be present at the meeting.
Antoniou said that after Özer’s announcement some people contacted him, but he reported that he can’t find the original owners of the land and that only the land registry can shed light on the matter.
