Only an Eighth of Unemployed Greeks Receive Benefits

According to data released by the Greek Employment Organization (OAED), only one in eight unemployed Greeks is receiving help from the Greek state. Unemployment benefits often do not apply to most jobless Greeks as they are considered long-term unemployed, a status that doesn’t qualify them for financial assistance.
The official figures of OAED for May 2014 show that the total number of registered unemployed citizens amounted to 814,693 people, compared to 828,299 in April 2014.
The total number of unemployed citizens in June reached 820,156 people. About 442,644 (53.97%) are registered in OAED for a period equal to or longer than 12 months, and 377,512 (46.03%) are registered for a period less than 12 months.
It is estimated that in Greece 326,097 (39.76%) of unemployed citizens are men and 494,059 (60.24%) are women.
