Greece’s athlete Katerina Stefanidi, 24, won the silver medal in pole vault at the 2014 European Athletics Championships taking place from August 12 to 17 in Zurich.
The young woman from Filothei, Athens, vaulted over 4.60 metres to come in second. Anzhelika Sidorova came first (4.65) and Angelina Zhuk-Krasnova third (4.60); both are from Russia.
It is only the second time Greece gets a medal in pole vault at the European Athletics Championship. Another Greek athlete, Nicole Kyriakopoulou, came in 7th, with 4.35 metres.
President of the Hellenic Republic Karolos Papoulias congratulated Stefanidi in a brief message.
“Your victory has given us great joy and pride; may you always have success,” Papoulias said.
Prime Minister Antonis Samaras said in his message, “Congratulations for your very important success. Once again, you lifted Greece up high and gave all Greeks and me personally great joy” and wished her further success, “which our homeland and Greek sports need so much.”
A message was also issued by government Vice President and Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos, who said that she stands for “the new generation of Greek female athletes who deservedly represent our country in international events and fill us with joy and pride.”
