Greek Villages Recognized as Martyr Cities 73 Years After Nazi Occupation

nazi-660_8Seventy-three years after the Nazi atrocities against Greece during the German occupation, the Council of StateĀ approved a presidential decree draft recognizing four Greek villages and one town as martyr cities.
The Greek Supreme Court gave the green light for the recognition of the martyr cities that suffered great losses during the Nazi Occupation and other historical periods.
The town of Kormista in the Municipality of Amphipolis in Serres, as well as the villages of Kerasovo in the Municipality of Pogonio in Ioannina, and Kleisto, Ambelofyto and Kidonia in East Kilkis,Ā were all marked as martyr cities.
The presidential decree draft was presented to the Council of StateĀ by the Greek Interior Minister. The municipalities and regions had presented all necessary documents in orderĀ to be declared as martyr cities.
Kerasovo was completely destroyed on August 15, 1944. Twenty eight people died, 11 of whom were executed. The villages in Kilkis were burnt to the ground. KormistaĀ saw many of its residents executed by the Bulgarians in 1941.
