PASOK Enters Civil War Era

Socialist-Pasok-PartyPASOK, the party that led the country for many years, has entered a civil war between those supporting former President and Prime Minister Giorgos Papandreou and those supporting current head of the Party, government Vice-President and Foreign Affairs Minister Evangelos Venizelos.
The war broke out yesterday when the two men attended an event marking the party’s 40th anniversary at Zappeion Hall.
Today, a Facebook post by the party’s communication and strategy officer Vasilis Deligkaris sparked the war once again. He stated that “A psychiatrist is necessary for PASOK” commenting on the Papandreou supporters that showed their discontent for Venizelos.
Although the post was removed after a while and Deligkaris stated that he was expressing his personal views and not the party’s, the war continued. Referring to Venizelos’ critics, PASOK Secretary Panagiotis Rigas stated that those are “the acts of ridiculous people aiming at creating nothing but noise.”
Yesterday, PASOK party supporters who gathered at the inauguration of the photo exhibition – titled “From Rigidity to Change” – organized by the Andreas G. Papandreou Foundation at Zappeion Hall as part of the celebrations to mark the party’s 40-year anniversary, showed their discontent towards Venizelos when he took the podium.
Supporters shouted slogans, such as “PASOK is here, strong and united”, “PASOK is here, with George as its leader” and “George, Let the Right Leave!” The atmosphere was negatively charged and Venizelos had difficulty completing his speech.
Venizelos kept calm and tried to respond to cries that criticized his collaboration with the conservative New Democracy government. “We will speak on Wednesday about the PASOK’s post-regime days, about what happened and how we have come to this point and where we should go. We will talk honestly, as circumstances demand,” he said.
During his speech, Papandreou was critical of the government. He said that citizens are demanding a new start and he also expressed his desire to open dialogue with citizens afresh.
PASOK MP Michalis Kassis, commenting on the event, stated his discontent about the cheers for Papandreou and said that “I did not attend the event and I won’t talk about the man who destroyed PASOK.”
Also, Kassis, speaking to “Vima 99.5” radio, accused Papandreou’s colleagues of deliberately creating this climate and scene.
However, he added that the tactic and positions adopted by Venizelos in order to exit the crisis were not correct, arguing that a leadership issue should be raised at the upcoming PASOK convention.
