Twenty one people were killed and hundreds were injured in the otherwise empty streets of Athens in August.
According to data from the Athens Traffic Police, there were 411 accidents with 538 victims during August, the holiday month in Greece. Twenty one of these accidents were fatal, with as many dead, 17 resulted in serious injuries and 373 were minor accidents with 496 slightly injured.
Furthermore, there were 26,224 traffic violations in August:
745 offenses for driving under the influence of alcohol, out of which 81 were in misdemeanor degree
1,596 speeding violations
429 red light violations
843 violations for cell phone use
486 for failure to use seat belts
1,360 for failure to wear a safety helmet
