Victim of Football Violence in Critical Condition

footbal clashesA 46-year-old football fan from Piraeus is hospitalized in critical condition on the island of Crete after a fight between fans of third division teams Irodotos and Ethnikos Piraeus.
Konstantinos Katsoulis, supporter of Ethnikos Piraeus team, was attacked on Sunday as violence erupted between supporters of the two clubs at the Nea Alikarnasos football field.
According to the medical report from the Venizelio hospital in Heraklion, the 46-year-old man was diagnosed with severe brain hemorrhage due to aneurysm rupture. The patient will be transferred to an Athens hospital for a life-saving operation.
As the match was coming to an end, Irodotos fans reportedly attacked 15-20 Ethnikos supporters at the stands. The 46-year-old man received blows to the head that caused serious injury. Two more Ethnikos fans were also seriously injured.
Ethnikos’ captain Manolis Lygkos urged the referee to end the game while the man received first aid treatment from the team’s doctor until the ambulance arrived.
Local police announced the arrest of a 27-year-old man as suspect for the attack against Katsoulis. Two more arrests were made. This was the first incident of violence for the new football season in Greece.
