Anastasiades and Kerry Discuss Cyprus Problem in New York

Anastasiades_KerryNew developments in the Cyprus problem, bilateral relations and energy issues were on the agenda of a meeting between Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades and US Secretary of State John Kerry in New York on Sunday evening.
The Cypriot President is in New York for the annual UN General Assembly and is scheduled to have meetings this week with other world leaders, including UN General Secretary Ban Ki-moon and US Vice-President Joe Biden.
Speaking to the press, Anastasiades described the meeting as highly productive. “The Secretary made clear how strongly the United States supports the work that is going on between the two sides,” reported one senior American official who wished to remain anonymous.
A source in the Cypriot government reported that the Secretary of State’s views are the same as those expressed by Vice-President Biden during his recent state visit to Cyprus.
Regarding the takeaway from Kerry`s recent talks in Ankara, Anastasiades said that the Secretary of State expressed optimism that Turkey “means what it says.” But the Cypriot President reiterated that the United States believes that this needs to be demonstrated through actions.
Regarding a possible visit to Cyprus by Secretary Kerry, Anastasiades suggested that, in the event of new developments, a trip could take place in the next weeks or months. “We are now beginning to see the start of real negotiations,” the anonymous official added.
A further issue of discussion was the right of the Republic of Cyprus to exploit the natural gas reserves in its exclusive economic zone. Anastasiades and Kerry also discussed the repercussions of EU bans on Russia on the Cypriot economy.
On Tuesday, Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs Ioannis Kasoulides will meet US Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland. Cypriot Government Spokesman Nikos Christodoulides will also hold talks with US Deputy Assistant Secretary Amanda Sloat. On Friday, Anastasiades will address the UN General Assembly.
