The Greek Police has disrupted a recent attempt to sell at least one infant in the city of Trikala in northern Greece. Posing as a childless couple seeking to proceed with the illegal adoption, two Greek police officers have arrested a Bulgarian woman who arranged to sell her newborn child for 8,000 euros.
According to trikalavoice.gr., the police came in contact with the mother via a local notary and a pediatrician. The meeting and arrest took place within a Trikala children’s clinic. The doctor, who appeared complicit in the crime, was also arrested. Both are being held by Trikala police. The notary is currently being interrogated to determine his level of involvement in the case.
Illegal adoption and baby trafficking are flourishing and highly profitable in Greece. Birth rates are low, while official adoption procedures are tremendously slow.
According to the Greek Justice Ministry, there are dozens of pending cases on the trading of minors and illegal adoptions in Greece. Many implicate doctors, as well as private clinics.
Investigation of such cases is on the rise since 2013’s discovery of a blue-eyed girl, Maria, in a Roma camp in central Greece.
