The first transfer of a Greek-Cypriot football player to a team located in the Turkish-occupied part of Cyprus has Greek fans shocked. Dimitris Vasileiou, 35, has played for several Cypriot football teams, but has now signed on with Değirmenlik FC, a team in the Turkish-Cypriot league.
On Thursday afternoon, the Cypriot midfielder was publicly welcomed by Turkish-Cypriot Football Federation president Hasan Sertoglu, who wished him success in his new venture.
The Greek-Cypriot community has released no official statement on the transfer, but many Cypriot Greeks are purportedly saddened by the news.
