Demolition of Roma Camp in Halandri

The demolition of the 12 vacant buildings in the Roma settlement in the area of Halandri, Athens, is taking place today after yesterday’s tension. Attempts to find a place to relocate the Roma families currently living in Halandri are also being made.
The crews of the General Secretariat of Decentralized Administration started demolishing the 12 vacant buildings near the National Mint of Greece this morning.
There was no tension in the roma camp today. Yesterday, the residents tried to stop the demolition crew by setting dumpsters on fire and blocking Mesogeion Avenue for hours.
A meeting between the General Secretary of Decentralized Administration Manolis Angelakas and the Secretary of Public Property has been scheduled for tomorrow in a bid to find a place other than Megara for the relocation of the Roma families.
Meanwhile, in late October, the appeals made by the municipalities of Megara and Mandra against the relocation of the Roma in the area of Kandili in Patera hill will be discussed by the Council of State.
