Euroleague Basketball: Great Week for Greek Clubs (VIDEOS)

Both Olympiacos (away – yesterday) and Panathinaikos (at home – today) grabbed important wins over Valencia (78-81) and Turow Zgorzelec (84-77) respectively for the first day of the Euroleague Tournament group stages.
In a close match at the Pabellon Fuente De San Luis in Valencia, Olympiacos kept the lead for most of the game against the local club but lack of focus in the last quarter brought the teams tied with a minute to go. It was Kostas Sloukas with 3/4 free throws and a decisive offensive rebound that handed the Reds’ first European victory of the season. Top scorers were Vasilios Spanoulis and Kostas Sloukas with 19 points, same as Luke Harangody for the Valencian club.

Although Panathinaikos is comprised mostly of inexperienced young lads this season, Polish side Turow did not pose as serious threat on their Euroleague debut as their fear towards the Greek champions was evident throughout the game. In the OAKA Sports Arena, the Greens did not mess about and with a concise but full game from Nikos Papas (16 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists in 22 mins) and help from A.J Slaughter (16 points), Vladimnce iros Giankovic (13 points) and Janis Blums (11 points), they gave their fans a first view of what to expect this year; a young team full of passion and drive, lead by captain Dimitrios Diamantidis and coach Dusko Ivanovic who plan to honor their six-starred jersey.
