A gang of Greek and Albanian drug smugglers were arrested in Athens and Thessaloniki on October 14, the Greek Police announced on Monday.
After searching the homes of the suspects in Athens and Thessaloniki, police discovered 13.5 kilograms of pure heroin and five kilograms of a chemical substance probably used to cut the heroin.
The gang was smuggling the narcotics from Turkey to Greece by car. According to police reports, the heroin was hidden in the car’s airbag compartment. The drugs were then transported to Athens where a 43-year-old Albanian man received the bundle. The Albanian man is suspected of being the distributor.
The 39-year-old Greek man who was arrested is suspected to be the tester and his 40-year-old sister an accomplice. A 54-year-old Greek woman who was arrested is suspected for arranging the purchase of the heroin from Turkey.
Authorities are now looking for two Albanian men who allegedly belong to the gang.
Police officials say that one kilogram of pure heroin can yield up to eight kilograms of heroin in the drug market. The street value of one gram varies between 30 and 60 euros, depending on purity.
