arxaia-metro1

A wooden sculpture of a manly figure surfaced during excavations, prior to the planned construction work for the expansion of Athens Metro to the port of Piraeus, close to the city’s Municipal Theater.

Along with the wooden sculpture, a piece of marble was discovered, probably a sculpture of goddess Artemis, while other ancient relics were also found at the same spot in the past, during the initial phase of construction, including three pieces of mosaic floor. All the above will be put on display within the “Municipal Theater” station, after its completion.

The dark colored wooden sculpture misses its head and arms, and has a height of 0.47m and width of 0.21m. It is in a standing position while its two opposite directing legs evince it was created as walking. It is dressed in an envelope, both its elbows are bent at the height of its waist and its humerus stretched to the front. The sculpture, which can not yet be identified, has been moved to the Department of Prehistoric and Classic Antiquities’ conservation laboratory .
