Greek Coalition Govt Leaders to Redefine Policy

Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and Government Vice President and Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos agreed to redefine government policy over a number of issues – including the way the two partnering parties handle the Troika – after the markets’ negative reactions.

During their meeting at the government headquarters, Samaras and Venizelos concluded that they should find a common space regarding public sector wages, as this issue led to a clash between New Democracy and PASOK, the two parties forming the coalition government.

Their decision was based on the fact that the government is running out of time with the reforms, while information from abroad, feeds the rumor that the new round of negotiations with the Troika is going to be rough. The two-party coalition is moving across a thin red line, as the open issues that divide them are still open and should be closed as soon as possible in order to proceed with the country’s review. In the immediate future, apart from public sector wages, insurance and labor issues will be put on the table.

What is of exceptional significance at the present moment for the government, is to regain the creditors’ trust, as, according to political sources, the latest events have taken Greece back in terms of credibility.

In an attempt to appease both interior and European partners, Samaras appeared confident, during the 13th Tourism and Development Conference, that Greece will be safe in the post-memorandum era and will stay on track with the reforms.
