Greek FinMin: Outstanding Debts Amendment a 'Breather'

Gikas Hardouvelis

“The government responds to the need for a ‘breather’ to thousands of our fellow citizens who due to this difficult economic situation are not in a position to repay their debts,” Greek Finance Minister Gikas Hardouvelis said in Parliament earlier today.

Hardouvelis added that new legislative initiatives are to be taken in the near future and will include corrections regarding foreclosures. He also announced specific actions for big debtors, stressing that the government is committed to strengthening the compliance measures. Commenting on the amendment, the Minister said it came as a “result of intense, thorough preparation and coordinated actions. This provision aims at helping those people who face difficulties in meeting their obligations due to liquidity problems.”

In addition, Hardouvelis explained that “the state actively supports the consistent taxpayers who meet their obligations under the previous debt settlement scheme.” The amendment on the settlement of arrears to the state is expected to be voted in Greece ‘s Parliament on Friday.
