Greek 'Basket of Goods' Is Never Full

The financial crisis has affected several sectors of the Greek economy. One of them is the households’ so-called “basket of goods.”
In reality, the situation prevailing in most Greek households is that the basket of goods is not full anymore due to a reduction in the amounts Greeks spend at supermarkets.
According to a survey conducted by Nielsen, the habits of Greek consumers going to the supermarket have changed in recent years, as a result of the financial crisis.
The survey showed that the number one criterion in consumer habits is the price of goods, in contrast to the rest of Europe where the criterion is quality.
An IRI survey noted that there are seven large supermarket chains in Greece that have overthrown regional, small grocery stores. 9 out of every 10 euros consumers spend are directed to one of the seven large supermarkets.
Moreover, 6 out of 10 Greek consumers have stated that they expect to spend less in shopping (Nielsen survey), while one third of those making online purchases, have bought at least one supermarket item (Dunnhumby survey).
