President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades will undergo a planned surgery on his mitral valve in New York, as announced by the Cypriot Presidential Palace earlier today. According to the official statement, the Cypriot President is scheduled to depart for the United States on Saturday, November 29, and the heart operation will be completed on December 4. The announcement comes only a few days after a previous one, declaring that the surgery would not be carried out before the European Council meeting on December 17 and 18.

According to Cypriot newspaper “Politis,” the heart surgery will be carried out at Mount Sinai hospital in New York, which is considered amongst the best in the field, while the choice was taken in consultation with members of the Cypriot Diaspora in the United States. Discussions went on for ten days and arrangements were made after a meeting at the Presidential Palace on Monday. The Cypriot President expressed his will to have the procedure done in his country, although his own doctors were the ones advising him that it would be better to travel to the United States for that purpose.

“The President is expected to return to Cyprus before the Christmas holidays,” the statement said, although the exact date of his return has not yet been specified.
