Greek police made five arrests in Kozani, northern Greece, regarding a case of baby trafficking, involving three Greeks and two Bulgarians.
On November 28, a 23-year-old Bulgarian woman was admitted into a local maternity clinic, using false documents. The police was alerted and after the Bulgarian woman gave birth she was arrested.
Furthermore, police also arrested a 26-year-old Greek woman, her 40-year-old husband and her 56-year-old mother-in-law. The couple was trying to buy the baby from the woman for the price of 2,500 euros.
The three Greeks were led before the prosecutor of Kozani charged with infant trafficking and document forging. They were all released on bail. Meanwhile, a 31-year-old Bulgarian man was later arrested as well for allegedly setting up the illegal adoption.
The newborn baby girl is in good health and is currently staying at the maternity clinic along with her mother who is under police supervision.
Greece is considered ideal for infant trade, with traffickers charging between 7,000 and 20,000 euros to secure a baby for couples who have failed to have a child of their own. Most circuits are controlled by Bulgarian nationals, who find pregnant women in their country of origin and transfer them to Greece for childbirth. Greek lawyers and notaries work as accomplices to these circuits and manage their paperwork.
