Ormenio Village Evacuated After Evros River Levee Breaks

ormenio-plimmires_475_355The Citizen Protection Agency of Evros region decided the evacuation of Ormenio village after an Evros River Levee Broke.
The extreme rainfall in northern Greece, and particularly in Thrace, has caused the flooding of Evros River. The residents of Ormenio village were in danger after a nearby Evros River levee broke. The village has been evacuated.
Deputy Evros Prefect Dimitris Petrovic said that the water level of Evros River is steadily exceeding six meters and state agencies are on alert to protect people at risk and prevent damages in the area. “We are monitoring all levees on a 24-hour basis so that we can act immediately in case of emergency,” he said.
Several areas in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace have been put on emergency watch over harsh weather conditions. Many animal farms near the rivers Evros and Ardas are in danger of flooding.
The Hellenic National Meteorological Service is expecting weather conditions to improve later in the day on Friday.
