Greek Unemployment Rate Drops to 25.5%

Unemployment
rate in Greece dropped to 25.5% during the third quarter of 2014, according to data released by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT).
The number of employed Greeks rose to 3,586,885 while the unemployed reached 1,229,370, thus reducing the unemployment rate to 25.5%. In the previous quarter, unemployment stood at 26.6% and 27.2% in the same quarter of 2013. Meanwhile, employment increased by 1.4% compared to the previous quarter and by 1.5% compared to the third quarter of 2013.
Women show a higher unemployment rate (29.2%) compared to men (22.6%), while the highest rate was recorded in young people aged 15-24 (49.5%).
The highest unemployment rate was recorded in people who have only attended elementary school (34.8%), closely followed by those who have never attended school (33.0%). The lowest rates were observed in people who have a doctorate or master’s degree (12.7%) and higher education graduates (20.6%).
Moreover, 18.7% of unemployed Greeks are strictly looking for a full-time job, while 75.1% are looking for a full-time job but they would also be content to work part-time.
Finally, recently unemployed Greeks – people who have never worked before – amount to 24.0%, while long-term unemployed – people who have been looking for a job for more than 12 months – have reached 75.4%.
