Spanish Podemos: Greek Elections Dilemma Is Merkel or Tsipras [Video]

Alexis Tsipras and Pablo Iglesias

There are two options for the upcoming January 25 Greek general elections, said Pablo Iglesias Turrion, leader and founder of leftist Spanish political party Podemos (We Can), and those are either the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, or the Greek main opposition SYRIZA leader, Alexis Tsipras. Furthermore, the Spanish politician expressed his firm belief that the Greeks will choose a “new Greek Premier for the country.”

“I am Pablo Iglesias from Podemos and my message to the Greek people is quite clear,” said the Podemos secretary general. “I think there are two options in the upcoming elections in Greece. Two candidates: The candidate named Angela Merkel, and is represented by parties like PASOK and New Democracy, and the Greek candidate named Alexis Tsipras,” he added.

“I’m sure the Greeks will choose a new Prime Minister for the country. I think in the South of Europe we need Prime Ministers who will defend and protect national sovereignty,” he concluded in his message ahead of the critical Greek elections.

According to the latest opinion polls conducted in Spain, Podemos holds a clear lead over the country’s two traditional political powers, the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) and the People’s Party (PP). Analysts highlight that the similarities between the Greek SYRIZA and the Spanish Podemos are many, while both parties have emerged in the central political scene with anti-austerity rhetoric.
