Greek Council of State Approves Return of Municipal Police

dhmotikThe Council of State, Greece’s highest administrative court, on Tuesday approved the coalition plan to re-establish the municipal police within the national police force.
The municipal police was disbanded in the summer of 2013 as part of the government’s effort to reduce the number of public sector employees.
Nevertheless, the coalition passed a law last year paving the way for the return of the municipal police with the establishment of three municipal police forces in  Athens, Thessaloniki and Rhodes. In the future, there would be 17 more municipal police forces in various big cities in Greece.
The municipal police forces will be manned by members of the national police force, former municipal police officers and civilians. The municipal police forces will be on duty 24/7.
Among their duties is dealing with parking violations and conducting inspections on stores, like the Athens municipal police duties in the past.
