EU Parliament President: Austerity Measures Imposed by Greek Govt, Not EU

Martin Schulz, EU parliament president, said a new deal of particular roads is wishful thinkingPresident of the European Parliament Martin Schulz commented that the austerity measures were imposed on Greek people by the Greek government, not by the European Union.
Speaking on the show “Petit Journal” on French Canal+ television station, the EU official commented on the political and social situation in Greece and the likelihood that leftist SYRIZA will win the snap Greek elections.
Martin Shulz said that the social situation in Greece is “unbearable,” but the austerity measures implemented were not dictated by the EU but were decided by the Greek government.
“I understand the anger of the Greeks because the situation is unbearable. We must certainly not forget that the Greek debt is 180 percent of GDP” and went on to say that “some of the measures imposed are unacceptable and must change.”
When asked by the show journalist if he is concerned over the possible emergence of leftist SYRIZA party in power, which is first in the polls, Schulz answered “not at all.”
