A Guide to Sunday's Greek General Elections

ekloges_15Greek voters go to the polls on January 25 in a general election that will decide whether Europe’s most-indebted country sticks to the economic-overhaul program set out by its Troika of official creditors or tries to chart its own course.
Voting begins at 7 a.m. on Sunday and finishes at 7 p.m. local time. A total of 9.8 million citizens are eligible to cast ballots, with more than a third concentrated in the Attica metropolitan area, which includes the city of Athens, Greece .
Exit polls will be published at the close of voting. There will be an initial estimate of the result based on ballots counted at around 9:30 p.m. and a more accurate estimate before midnight. The vote count will be available on the Interior Ministry’s website: http://ekloges.ypes.gr/.
According to the Greek electoral system, the elections winner gets a bonus of 50 seats in the Parliament, while the highest the aggregate percentage of the parties that do not make it to Parliament, the more seats will be then allocated to the parties that make it. Whether the winning party can form a majority government also depends on its overall actual result and the regional results (a complex exercise).
If no party has the absolute majority, the President shall give the leader of the party with the relative majority an exploratory mandate (in force for 3 days, i.e. until January 29) in order to ascertain the possibility of forming a government that enjoys the Parliament’s confidence. If it fails, the 2nd party gets the mandate (until February 1) and then the third.
If they all fail, then a new round of elections is called (within 20-30 days). Assuming a government is formed, on February 6, a new vote for the President takes place (180 seats needed), followed by another vote on February 12 (151 seats) or February 18 (majority).
