Greek Presidential Election Scenarios

president-candidateGreeks are awaiting the announcement of the new cabinet, however another issue that is being widely discussed is the candidate that the new Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras will propose for the position of President of the Hellenic Republic.
Several names are on the table at the moment, while Tsipras discussed the issue with Panos Kammenos, leader of the Independent Greeks who promised to provide his party’s vote of confidence to the new government coalition. Furthermore, Tsipras also discussed the issue during his meeting with Stavros Theodorakis, leader of To Potami.
The Greek Commissioner for Immigration issues Dimitris Avramopoulos is one of the perspective candidates. In fact, the online version of Europolitics published an article about rumors of the Commissioner’s departure.
Moreover, other names that are currently being discussed are: director Costa Gavras or Helene Glykatzi-Ahrweiler. Meanwhile, another scenario states that the new Greek Prime Minister will nominate someone for the center-right. Nikos Pappas, a close associate of Alexis Tsipras, did not rule out this possibility, noting that SYRIZA will act as a keeper of stability and democratic institutions. This scenario includes names such as that of former minister Prokopis Pavlopoulos or Konstantinos Karamanlis’ close associate and former Foreign Minister Petros Molyviatis.
Tsipras is expected to make an official announcement concerning the new candidate after announcing the cabinet composition.
