EU Parliament President Warns Greece About Stance Towards Russia

ts-sothl-708A few hours before arriving to Athens, President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz suggested to Greece not to deviate from the common European Union stance towards Russia regarding the crisis in Ukraine.
“I noticed with dismay that Greece today has abandoned the joint position of the European Union on Russia,” said Schulz on German public television ZDF only a few hours before arriving to Athens to meet with Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras. Schulz is the first foreign official visiting Greece after the establishment of the new SYRIZA-Independent Greeks coalition government.
“You just cannot, on the one hand, demand from Europe to show solidarity with your own country like Mr. Tsipras does and then, as a first official step, split the joint European position,” he added.
When asked what Europe will do in case Greece boycotts sanctions to Russia, the European official said, “this can’t be done. I will talk with Mr. Tsipras tomorrow and others will too in the coming days… I want to talk with Mr. Tsipras and ask him what he expects from the European Union. This is one of the reasons I am traveling there,” he said
“I will tell him tomorrow that any unilateral approaches in foreign policy won’t help him,” Schulz added. .
Schulz is a member of Germany’s coalition partner Social Democratic Party (SPD), He is meeting with Alexis Tsipras in Athens today to discuss, among other things, the program of the German government regarding the economy and how Greece will approach the debt issue.
