Former Greek King, Constantine II urges Greeks to give the country’s new Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras a chance. According to The London Times, the King, who has returned from exile after 47 years, says that Greece has suffered a lot and therefore the new leader and his anti-austerity policies should be given a chance.
As the report notes, the former King has permanently return to Greece after almost five decades in exile and now lives in a rented seaside villa in northern Greece, near mount Olympus. “It’s always flooding, we have mud all over the basement,” he says and “The Times” commented that even though he is the best-connected man in Europe he can’t find a good plumber.
Constantine II succeeded his father Paul in March 1964, becoming the youngest King of the Greeks, as at the time he was only 24 years old. He was forced to flee the country on December 13, 1967, after an unsuccessful counter-coup against the military junta, although he remained the head of the Greek State in exile until June 1973, when the dictatorial regime abolished the monarchy. The abolition of the monarchy in Greece was later confirmed by a plebiscite on December 1974.
