Cypriot President Anastasiades: Growth Strategy Is Our Main Concern

The Cypriot government’s emphasis is now turned toward a “Cypriot Reform Program,” aiming to fulfill the necessary structural reforms and set the foundations for a long-running sustainable growth in order to attract foreign investments and create the country’s new economic model, the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nicos Anastasiades, said in a meeting with the new Ambassador of Switzerland, Peter Reinhardt, at the Presidential Palace.
Anastasiades highlighted that the Memorandum agreed with the Troika of Cyprus’ international creditors is unequivocal and the way forward is not easy, although he appeared confident that the unity spirit and the Cypriots’ willingness to succeed will prevail. “We must all be aware of the challenges ahead, such as unemployment that is very high; the private and public sectors that are heavily indebted,” the Cypriot President said, adding that the banking sector remains vulnerable. Furthermore, he underlined that, among other initiatives, the government’s campaign to attract foreign investments, the foreclosure regime’s reform and the insolvency framework are intended to address these challenges.
At the same time, referring to the Cypriot government’s efforts to address the long-standing Cyprus problem, he highlighted that Turkey’s illegal and provocative actions in Cyprus’ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) since October 2014, subverted the very basic principle of negotiations, leading to the country’s withdrawal from the United Nations-backed talks. The resumption of result-orientated negotiations, aiming to a viable settlement of the matter, remains the government’s first priority, he added. “What we need now is the implementation of measures that will restore confidence, and not measures that increase mistrust among the legal citizens of the island, through actions that violate international law,” he characteristically noted, while calling the Turkish-Cypriot leadership and Turkey to demonstrate political will and negotiate in good faith.
On his behalf, the newly appointed Swiss Ambassador said that Cyprus has many valuable assets and it profits from being situated at the crossroad of different cultures, while having a proud heritage of its own, enriched with the spirit of creativity and hospitality. In regards to the bilateral relations, he said that they reflect a feeling of deep friendship and understanding.
