EC Officials Leave Greece Frustrated After Meeting with FinMin and Deputy PM

wieserPresident of the Euro Working Group Thomas Wieser and EC financial representative Declan Costello left Athens empty-handed after meeting with Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis and Deputy Prime Minister Yiannis Dragasakis.
According to a Proto Thema report, the two men left frustrated because, allegedly, the Greek officials did not present them with any figures and data while at the same time the new government, they said, “promises everything to everyone.”
The two officials came to Athens to help the new Greek government prepare better its positions ahead of the emergency Eurogroup on Wednesday, February 11th.
According to sources from the troika of lenders, the two men exerted pressure on Athens to remain on the existing financial aid program. They also clarified that there are only 72 hours left before Greece can come up with a financial plan to present to Wednesday’s Eurogroup. This was the second time in 10 days that Thomas Wieser visited Athens.
The new government will ask European partners to agree to a three-month “bridge plan” in order to have time to negotiate debt restructuring and sign a new deal. Europe, on the other side, will ask for an extension of the existing bailout program.
