Former PM Criticizes New Government Policy, Concerned Over Grexit

samaras1Former prime minister Antonis Samaras criticized the new government policy announced yesterday by Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and expressed his concerns about the possibility of a Grexit.
According to a Real.gr report, Samaras listened in silence to the policy statements and then he went to his office where he had a meeting with his close associates, the three New Democracy House representatives, the ND spokesperson and former parliament president Evangelos Meimarakis.
What was decided, according to the report, was for the opposition party to express its support on the new government effort to come to a new deal with Greece’s European partners, yet Samaras told reporters that “New Democracy expresses its deep concern, whether the new negotiation will be successful after the new government announcements.”
In the meeting, the ND party members came to the conclusion that after the new policy statements, the Tsipras government will come to a direct clash with Greece’s European partners and the results can be catastrophic. A close associate of the former PM told reporters that “Greek people did not vote for Mr. Tsipras to compromise Greece’s place in Europe and the euro zone.”
The associates of Samaras said that Tsipras “is trapped by his campaign promises” and pointed out that he left out many points of his program announced in Thessaloniki in September.
According to the report, New Democracy criticizes the new government for avoiding an explanation on what the “bridge plan” is that they propose regarding the debt. They also say that Tsipras pledged to remain loyal to the European Union rules, yet he refuses to abide by them by cancelling reforms proposed by the EU.
Also, a Samaras associate said, “Mr. Tsipras asked the parliament for a six-month extension of the memorandum when in the past they complained when the Samaras government had already put on the table the end of the bailout program and credit line support for February 28.”
In the meeting it was decided that ND will follow a “hard line” against ministers of the new government throughout the course of the discussion of policy. What was decided is that both PMs and former ministers will confront new ministers on every aspect of new legislations proposed by Tsipras.
