PM Tsipras Postpones Announcement of Greek Presidential Candidate

lafazanis_tsiprasGreek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras will not announce the name of the candidate for the President of the Hellenic Republic this evening as it was originally scheduled.
Analysts say that certain extreme leftist SYRIZA members disagreed over the name of most likely candidate Dimitris Avramopoulos.
Government spokesperson Gavrill Sakellaridis said that the decision to postpone the announcement was because of Monday’s critical meeting of the Eurozone Finance Ministers in Brussels. On Tuesday, he said, SYRIZA’s central committee will convene and the candidate’s name will be announced that evening so the first ballot can take place on Wednesday at the parliament.
On Sunday afternoon, Tsipras met with his coalition partner, Independent Greeks (ANEL) leader and Defense Minister Panos Kammenos. According to news reports citing SYRIZA members who wished to remain anonymous, Kammenos proposed the name of New Democracy MP Dora Bakoyianni. Tsipras allegedly said he will take the proposal to SYRIZA’s central committee.
Immediately after their meeting, Productive Reconstruction Minister Panagiotis Lafazanis entered the government headquarters through the side door, followed by SYRIZA central committee secretary Dimitris Vitsas and parliamentary party spokesperson Nikos Filis.
Analysts say that Tsipras tried to convince Lafazanis who objects to the candidacy of New Democracy member Avramopoulos. According to an “iefimerida.gr” report, Lafazanis proposed the names of center-leftist politician Manolis Drettakis and author Ioanna Karystiani.
SYRIZA’s central committee convened later without Tsipras. According to analysts, the Avramopoulos candidacy does not meet the approval of several SYRIZA members.
