Cyprus Man Killed by Rocket in Gang Feud

cyprusA man was killed by a rocket fired Tuesday night in the Strovolos suburb of Nicosia in Cyprus. Police say the house the rocket was fired at belongs to an underworld figure and the dead man was a guard.
The anti-tank rocket and the automatic weapon fire aimed at suspected criminal Alexis Mavromihalis at the time he was returning to his home, at 8 p.m. yesterday, according to private television station Sigma.
The Cypriot Press reported that the victim was a guard at the house. He was transferred to the hospital where he later died of his wounds.
Police confirmed the death yesterday but said they could not name the victim as the family had yet to be informed.
According to Cyprus’ Business Standard, violence of this kind is rare, but Cyprus was plagued by gangland turf wars in the early 1990s.
In 2013, five bodyguards were killed on a busy weekend night at the seaside resort of Ayia Napa when two hired gunmen opened fire on a car belonging to a businessman who they had apparently thought was traveling in it, according to the report.
