Sfendyli: Sinking Village in Crete [VIDEO]

sfendyliGreek photographer Giorgos Skrafnakis recorded a stunning video that shows the before and after state of Sfendyli, a Greek village which is slowly sinking due to the rise of water in Aposelemis Dam.
Skrafnakis’ video shows shots of Sfendyli from 2013 until today depicting how the village is slowly being covered by water from Aposelemis dam in the Hersonissos Municipality.
The artificial dam design provides for the gradual sinking of the entire Greek village, which is slowly disappearing from the map, so that the water can reach Heraklion and Agios Nikolaos, Crete.
The foundation of the village dates back to 1577. It is a medieval village with a long history and rich culture. Within the village, there is a Byzantine church from the 14th century with impressive historical fresco’s, by Emmanuel and Ioannis Fokas, significant representatives of Constantinople art in Crete. However, the government hasn’t ensured its protection.
The Greek state has already provided the residents compensation for the loss of their properties. However, the villagers claim that the compensation is small and that the government should have arranged for the village’s relocation to another region.
