Greek Airports Show Passenger Traffic Increase

AIAThe Greek airports of Athens, Heraklion, Chania, Mykonos and Thessaloniki were included on the list of European airports with the highest performance in terms of increase in passenger traffic.
According to the International Airports Council International Europe (ACI EUROPE) report, passenger traffic at Athens airport in January 2015 increased by 28.1% compared to January 2014, while in Chania airport, Crete, passenger traffic has more than doubled (103.9% increase). Meanwhile, Mykonos airport passenger traffic increased by 54.1%, Thessaloniki by 40% and Heraklion, Crete, by 16.4%.
Passenger traffic at European airports increased by 4.8% on average in January 2015 compared to the same month last year, while EU airports showed a 5.1% increase. In European airports outside the EU (including Iceland, Norway, Russia, Switzerland and Turkey) passenger traffic increased by 3.8%.
The ACI EUROPE report classifies European airports into four groups based on yearly passenger traffic statistical data. The first group includes airports with more than 25 million passengers per year. The highest passenger traffic growth was recorded in Madrid airport, Antalya, Istanbul (IST), Rome (FCO) and London (LGW).
The second group includes airports where the number of passengers ranges between 10 and 25 million per year. The highest increase was recorded in Athens, London (STN), Istanbul (SAW), Lisbon and Dublin.
The third group, where the number of passengers ranges between 5 and 10 million passengers per year, recorded the highest increase in Milan (BGY), Heraklion (Crete), Porto, Bucharest and Budapest.
Finally, the fourth group includes airports with less than 5 million passengers each year. The highest growth was recorded in the airports of Chania (Crete), Mykonos, Ostrava and Thessaloniki.
The ACI EUROPE report on passenger traffic take into account data from 201 European airports (88% of the total passenger traffic). ACI EUROPE represents more than 450 airports in 45 European countries and is based in Brussels.
