Greek Government Rushes to Complete List of Reforms

maximouThe Greek government is rushing to complete by Monday the comprehensive list of reforms lenders require before they release further financial aid.
If the list is presented on Monday, then the Eurogroup will convene on Tuesday or Wednesday. If the list is approved and Athens shows that reforms are in the process of being implemented, then liquidity taps will open and cash-strapped Greece will be able to breathe.
The list that will be submitted to the Eurogroup will be an elaborate national reform plan, the Greek government said in a non-paper released on Thursday. The government stressed there would be no recessionary measures and asked for the understanding and support of Greek society.
Information from sources within the government say that the list will focus on structural reforms that will tackle tax evasion and minimize bureaucracy, while it will also include the privatization of regional airports to generate immediate revenues.
According to the official statement, the memorandum ended on January 25 and the new Greek government signed for an extension of the loan agreement based on the Eurogroup decision of February 20. Negotiations are taking place on the basis of reforms proposed by the Greek side, and they do not include recessionary measures such as pension and wage cuts or measures that will upset the labor market.
The government statement is also a reply to opposition leader Antonis Samaras who accused the Alexis Tsipras government for lying to the Greek people by signing a memorandum which is the continuation of the one they claim they have abolished.
“If we had signed to continue the memorandum, then what would the purpose of negotiations be?” the government spokesperson asked, citing as victories in negotiations the new laws that deal with the humanitarian crisis and overdue debts to the state.
“In the significant days ahead of us, we are asking for the support of Greek society in the struggle for dignity, prosperity and social justice,” the official statement concludes.
