The relations between Greece and Cyprus have become even stronger, newly elected President of the Hellenic Republic Prokopis Pavlopoulos highlighted earlier today during a meeting with his Cypriot counterpart Nicos Anastasiades. This is Pavlopoulos’ first official visit since he took office on March 13.

The Greek President, who arrived on the island this morning for a two-day official visit, said that he feels like home in Cyprus and noted that the more difficulties the two countries face, the more their relations become stronger. On his behalf, Anastasiades, after welcoming the Greek President in Cyprus, wished him every luck in his new duties, adding that he looks forward to strengthening the two countries’ bilateral cooperation even further. As he stressed, the strong ties between the two countries date back to ancient times, explaining that Greece and Cyprus share common roots, common culture and language. Moreover, Anastasiades expressed his optimism that the Greek President’s presence in Cyprus will once again confirm the genuine Greek interest for the Cypriot people.

Pavlopoulos noted that the two countries share common problems, such as the Cyprus problem, but also common concerns in regards to Europe. Cyprus and Greece, he underlined, “have an important role to play so that Europe rediscovers the principles and values on which it was founded and which have Greek roots.” As he said, the European Union member-states must respect Union and Eurozone policies, as the very formation of the European community was based on values and principles that should not be forgotten. After a private meeting, the two leaders presided over consultations between the two countries’ delegations.

According to the visit’s schedule, Pavlopoulos will also have meetings with Archibishop Chrysostomos II and Cypriot Parliament President Yiannakis Omirou. In the afternoon, he is scheduled to address the plenary of the Cypriot Parliament and will also have meetings with political parties. Later in the evening, the Greek President will attend a formal dinner hosted by the Cypriot President at the Presidential Palace.

On Tuesday, the Pavlopoulos will visit the so-called “Green Line,” dividing the island’s capital, Nicosia, since 1974; the northern Turkish occupied part and the free area. During this visit, Pavlopoulos will be accompanied by Nicosia Mayor Constantinos Yiorkadjis. Finally, before departing later on Tuesday, he will visit the Greek Contingent in Cyprus (ELDYK), in line with the provisions of the 1960 Constitution that established the Republic of Cyprus.
