Russia Denies Report About Signing Gas Pipeline Deal with Greece

Tsipras-Poutin15-1728x800_cRussia has denied a report that it is about to sign a gas pipeline deal with Greece as early as Tuesday.
The report cameĀ from German magazine Der Spiegel and cited an unnamed Greek government official. The Greek official said that the deal may be signed as early as April 21 and help cash-strapped Greece avoid bankruptcy.
The deal, that willĀ allegedly bring Athens 3-5 billion euros, would be an advance payment for the pipeline that will have Russian gas pass through Turkey and Greece. The pipeline’s construction is scheduled to be completed in 2019.
GreekĀ Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras’Ā recent visit to Moscow and his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin has spurred scenarios of Greece getting financial aid from Russia. However, both sides have denied that Tsipras asked Putin for a loan. Yet, the Greek Prime Minister expressed interest in an energy deal with Russia that would involve Greece participating in the new natural gas pipeline.
Russian government spokesperson Dmitry Peskov denied the German magazine report saying that there is no such agreement. He also reiterated that Greece has not asked Russia for a loan.
“Naturally, the question of energy cooperation was raised. Naturally … it was agreed that, at the expert level, there would be a working-out of all issues connected with cooperation in the energy sphere, but Russia did not promise financial help because no one asked for it,” Peskov said to RIA news agency.
Commenting on the report, Wolfgang Schaeuble, the Finance Minister of Germany — Greece’s biggest creditorĀ — said, “I do not think that this would solve the problems Greece has in fulfilling the commitments of the Memorandum of Understanding [with its European partners].”
