Unemployed people in Greece might not find work again, as long-term unemployment figures are soaring, a Eurostat study shows.
Long-term unemployment means that someone has been unemployed for more than 12 months. In 2014, 73.5 percent of unemployed Greeks were out of work for more than a year. In 2013 the percentage of long-term unemployed was at 67.1.
Relevant figures by region in Greece are staggering. Attica, Greece’s region that includes the capital and the Piraeus Port, the largest in Greece, shows 77.3 percent long-term unemployment. It should be noted that more than half of the country’s population is gathered in the Attica region.
Western Greece comes second at 76.7 percent, Epirus is at 75.8 percent, Central Macedonia at 75.2 percent, Peloponnese at 73.8 percent and Thessaly at 73.5 percent.
The Eurostat study shows that Greece, Spain and Italy show the highest regional unemployment figures.
The long-term unemployment average among European Union countries was 49.3 percent in 2014, higher than the 2013 figure at 47.2 percent.
The Epirus region also has the highest youth unemployment rate among Europe’s 28 standing at 69.8 percent. On the other end of the spectrum is Oberbayern in Germany where youth long-term unemployment is only 3.7 percent. The average figure of unemployed people 15-24 years old in Europe is 21.9 percent.
Youth unemployment in Greece stood at 52.4 percent in 2014, down from 58.3 percent in 2013.
