The final countdown before the critical May 11 Eurogroup has already started. Meanwhile, the heavy atmosphere that Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis faced at the Eurozone Finance Ministers meeting have brought to light scenarios of snap elections or a referendum.
The Greek government has stressed that the last election was held just three months ago and that “the government was given a recent mandate by the people,” however no one knows what would happen if rupture occurs between the country and its European partners. At the same time, several Ministers and SYRIZA government executives have hinted at the possibility of a snap election.
Meanwhile, main opposition New Democracy is preparing for every scenario. They may support the idea that a snap election would be devastating for the country, however they fear that the new government may take them by surprise. New Democracy leader Antonis Samaras stated that a snap election is equivalent to the return to the drachma. “They are asking us to approve the country’s destruction,” he said.
According to recent polls, SYRIZA has remained in the lead, while Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras is described as the government’s “strong card.” Furthermore, the recent polls show that the vast majority of Greeks are in favor of staying the Eurozone.
According to a survey conducted for Greek newspaper “To Vima,” SYRIZA is in the lead with 36.9%, followed by New Democracy with 21.7%. A different survey for Greek newspaper “Proto Thema” found SYRIZA in the lead with 35.9%, while New Democracy was second with 21.8%.
