BBC Short Documentary Explores Greek Café in Crete

ploumi-crete BBC has released a short documentary on a Greek cooperative grocery shop café located in Archanes, Crete.
“Ploumi,” the cooperative cafe and grocery store in Archanes first opened its doors in 2014 and has become one of the many autonomous communities that have been created in order to help the people of Greece deal with the financial crisis. All of its members contribute what they can in order to ensure their community’s survival.
Most of the owners are musicians. They claim that musicians who get involved with cooking usually excel. Their goal was not just to open a café for the locals but to create something different that did not exist in Crete.
Kallia Spyridaki and Christophoros Avgoustinas spoke to BBC and explained their work and the idea behind “Ploumi.”
According to the café owners, the idea first came to them in the summer of 2013, after they realized that when they acted as an informal community, they supported each other. As a result, they enjoyed a better quality of life without the daily stress, while they all had a simple way of highlighting each other’s capabilities.
When they realized that they could have fun, eat quality and healthy food, learn from each other and support people in need without always thinking about money, they decided to open their cooperative grocery shop café.
