A 4.3-magnitude earthquake occurred at about 7:07 a.m. on Monday morning, in the maritime area south of Crete, Greece , and was felt in Mesara and the southern coast of the island.
The Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens reported that the earthquake occurred 94.5 kilometers south of Heraklion and 63 kilometers southeast of Tympaki. It was also announced that the earthquake took place at a depth of about 10 kilometers.
Earthquakes have historically caused widespread damage across central and southern Greece, Cyprus, Sicily and other neighboring regions. Last year a series of strong earthquakes on the island of Kefalonia damaged hundreds of homes and injured more than a dozen people.
