President Jean-Claude Juncker and Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras made progress in Greece’s bailout negotiations during a telephone call on Wednesday.
The two officials discussed the need for reforms in Greece’s pension system “so that it is fair, fiscally sustainable and effective in averting old-age poverty,” a joint statement from Greece and the European Commission said. Juncker and Tsipras also discussed labor market and wage reforms.
The joint statement issued by the two authorities reads:
“President Jean-Claude and Greek Prime Minister Aexis Tsipras had a telephone communication. They discussed the progress made in recent days in talks between Greece and its partners on the question of the comprehensive package of reforms, in order to successfully complete the evaluation.
Particular reference was made to the importance of reforms to modernize the pension system so that it is fair, fiscally sustainable and effective in averting old-age poverty.
Also discussed were the need for wage and labor market reforms so that they play a supportive role in job creation, competitiveness and social cohesion. In this context there was convergence of views on the role of a modern and efficient system of collective bargaining in the labor market, which should be developed through broad consultation and meet the highest European standards.
Constructive talks should continue within the Brussels Group.
